When it comes to Babe New York, we're pretty much smitten. Here's why:
1. The line is the simple, chic, and totally wearable
2. The prices are affordable (especially considering that Babe is both designed and produced in New York #isitlocal)
3. I have a bit of a girl crush on the designer, who would most like to see Sophia Coppola in her wares and calls herself a Brooklyn girl
4. Finally, the name itself: Babe New York is probably the best name for a line I've ever heard
I was lucky enough to speak to the babe behind the line, who told me about her Great Aunt, being a one-woman show, and her nerdy 12-year-old self.
Designer Colleen Keller had spent the last three years working in domestic production for other emerging fashion designers (awesome) when she decided to take matters into her hands and start her own line. The first step? Coming up with a name.
"Babe was my Great Aunt. I wanted to start a line for some time and what really prevented me from diving in was coming up with a name. I was visiting family in Chicago when it just clicked. I thought it would be a great way to honor her and I mean, c’mon, who doesn’t want to be a babe?"
The name (and the line behind it) has taken off - this gal is selling in Steven Alan, for pete's sake - but Colleen still handles the majority of the work herself.
"I’m a one-woman show, but I do have a lot of support from family and friends! I make all the patterns for Babe – my expertise is fit so I really enjoy the process of translating a design to a pattern then to a garment and making sure the original concept looks good on a body."
And as it turns out, Colleen's always been a fan of construction,
"I’ve been sewing ever since I can remember. My nerdy twelve-year-old self would be pretty proud if she could see me now."
And finally, just what is this Babe girl hoping to accomplish with her chic and simple designs?
"My design is inspired by my lifestyle and what I want to wear. I think there’s a definite movement towards pairing it all down so you can focus on the essentials in life –relationships, travel, experiences and emotions. And that’s what I’m trying to do with Babe."
Yep, we're smitten all right.
